This month, the RTA is joining in the celebration of National Community Planning Month. Established in 2006 by the American Planning Association, National Community Planning Month is a way to highlight the role of planners and the importance of good planning in communities across the region.
One form of good planning creates walkable communities in which to live and work with access to transit services, and makes this an opportunity for all. Thorough planning and strategic investments in innovation and infrastructure boosts the economy and strengthens communities. While people may not realize it, planning significantly impacts day-to-day lives. From where they live, to how they commute, to the type of home they live in, planning plays a vital role in a person’s life and well-being.
2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the RTA’s Community Planning program, and the RTA’s involvement in community planning as it relates to public transportation and transit-supportive land use. By providing technical assistance and support to complete and implement plans, the RTA’s Community Planning program encourages municipalities in the region to develop walkable and more sustainable communities near transit stations and along transit corridors.
To mark 20 years of the Community Planning program, here are 20 highlights of the program to show how a range of work can benefit riders.
