It all started on a bus, but it became a day to honor an historic act of bravery. This day in history on December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, civil rights icon Rosa Parks was jailed for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white passenger, which was a violation of the city’s racial segregation laws. The successful Montgomery Bus Boycott, organized by Martin Luther King, Jr., followed Parks’ historic act of civil disobedience.
Her legacy lives on today and I’m inspired by her most famous quote, “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.”
Here are what some transit agencies around the country are doing today to honor Rosa Parks’ legacy:
The Milwaukee County Transit system honored Rosa Parks by reserving a seat on every bus with a sign and the quote, “My only concern was to get home after a hard day’s work.”
The University of Maryland Bus System also reserved a seat on every bus in their fleet with a sign and the quote, “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”
