RTA Awarded Nearly $5.2 Million in Capital Funding to Help Improve Access to Region’s Transit System

October 28, 2015

The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is helping to fund transit-related improvements including sidewalks, bus shelters, bike racks and pedestrian crosswalks, to make it easier for residents to use the region’s transit system. Project costs of approximately $5.2 million, with $4.2 million in federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) program funds and just over a $1 million in RTA funds, will be allocated to 11 projects between 2016 and 2020, pending approval by the RTA’s Board of Directors in December.

“These projects literally build the connections necessary to retain current riders and attract new ones,” said RTA Executive Director Leanne Redden. “We are committed to eliminating barriers to a person riding our transit system so we are pleased to provide these funds to municipalities in the region to make these improvements.”

Two examples of the types of improvements these dollars will fund:

  • Improved sidewalks and new crosswalk at the Chicago Ridge Metra station.   These improvements were recommended in the Ridgeland Avenue Corridor Study funded by the RTA’s Community Planning program. These improvements will be made with the help of a $798,000 CMAQ grant and $200,000 RTA match.
  • New bike racks around the City of Evanston’s Main Street Station.   The enhancements bring to life just some of the recommendations outlined in the Main Street Station Study funded through the RTA’s Community Planning program. The improvements will be made possible through a $56,000 federal CMAQ grant along with RTA funds of $14,000.

This is the second time the RTA has applied for and was awarded CMAQ funding on behalf of communities in the region. The first round of pilot projects funded through CMAQ grants, totaling $2 million is currently underway, which include projects like the installation of sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian signals in the Villages of Palos Heights and Rolling Meadows. Both projects are slated to begin this fall.
