RTA Urges Drivers To Take Public Transit During I-290 and I-355 Construction PDF Print E-mail

Resurfacing slated from April 1 until Fall 2010

CHICAGO – The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is encouraging drivers to take public transportation as an alternative to driving during the Illinois Department of Transportation's (IDOT) Interstates 290 and 355 Resurfacing Project slated for April 1, 2010.

"The RTA is working with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra and Pace to ensure affected drivers have viable travel options to assist in getting to their destination during this construction phase," said Steve Schlickman, RTA Executive Director. "We recommend they consider using mass transit to avoid traffic congestion while IDOT works to improve two heavily traveled highways."

The IDOT Resurfacing Project covers approximately 27 miles of Interstate 290 (Eisenhower Expressway) from Thorndale Avenue to the Circle Interchange and Interstate 355 from Army Trail Road to Interstate 290 within Cook and DuPage counties. The project is expected to be completed by this Fall.

The road work includes milling and resurfacing the driving surface, shoulder and all exit and entrance ramps. Drivers should expect permanent lane closures and temporary night time lane closures. Additionally, 37 bridges will be repaired including bridge decks and approach pavement patching, barrier wall repair and joint repair.

Visit www.RTAchicago.com for updated construction alerts and to plan your next trip using public transit. For more information about the Resurfacing Project, visit IDOT's website at www.dot.il.gov/I290/index.html.
