The Community Planning program provides funding and planning assistance to communities for planning projects that benefit local communities and the regional transportation system. Community Planning offers municipalities an opportunity to participate in the planning of local transportation, transit and transit-related opportunities. Services offered include the creation of transit-oriented development plans, local transit improvement plans for bus and rail and integrated transportation and land use plans.
In an effort to expand opportunities for transportation and land use planning assistance, the Regional Transportation Authority of Northeastern Illinois (RTA) and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) have partnered to release a joint call for Community Planning Applications for the 2012 program. By partnering with CMAP, the Community Planning program is able to provide additional funding to an expanded base of eligible applicants, align all efforts with CMAP’s GO TO 2040 Plan, and provide inter-agency coordination of expertise, technical assistance and capacity. The Community Planning program strives to not just plan for the future, but to provide assistance that achieves results.
Transit-oriented development and local transit-improvement plans will be evaluated and—if selected—funded and managed by the RTA; transportation and land use plans outside of a transit focus will be evaluated and—if selected—funded and managed by CMAP.
